Since 2018 we have diversified our programme to include Food and Wine pairing events, and these have proved to be consistently popular. Venues so far have included The Farmers Club, Casa, The Swan at Woolpit and Baileys. We organise an interesting lunch or dinner menu and then ask two of our members to choose (anonymously) wines to go with each course. During the meal the participants vote for the wine which better matches the food for each course, and at the end the wines and choosers are revealed, with a small prize going to the chooser with the most votes. The menus on these occasions usually include smaller plates of ‘fine dining’ food, with an emphasis on great flavours and attractive presentation.

We aim to continue with these highly successful convivial events 3 or 4 times a year, and to add further occasional events – a gin tasting and meal is planned in the near future.

Garden Party at Sapiston

On the 16th July  wine society members enjoyed a Garden Party at the home of Giles and Claire Smith. Wynn was our chef, committee members provided extra food, Giles ordered and served an interesting range of wines and members enjoyed a fine lunch in the sun. Thank you very much to Giles and Claire for inviting us to such a lovely location.

Meanwhile we offer our best wishes to all members at this very difficult time, and hope that everyone stays safe and healthy over the coming weeks and months.

Meal at West Suffolk College

We are delighted to be going for the first time to the West Suffolk College for a meal, on Wednesday 25th May. Two members will choose wines to accompany our courses and members will decide which they feel best compliments the food. If you are interested in being one of the two anonymous wine choosers for this event, please let Wynn know as soon as possible. There will be a generous budget for the four wines you will need to select, and a worthwhile prize for the winning chooser (as well as a prize for the runner-up!) If you would like to have a quick chat about what is involved, please feel free to give Wynn a call on 07580 132568.

Please remember to bring your tasting glasses. We look forward to what should be a great evening.

Bury St Edmunds Golf Club

Wednesday 15 April 2020

This food and wine pairing event will take place at the Bury St Edmunds Golf Club. It follows on from our highly successful and enjoyable January Supper there earlier this year. The chefs at the club have agreed to take on the challenge of providing us with a first class fine dining menu, and we will, as usual, be asking two of our members to volunteer to select wines (within a given budget) to accompany the food. Each course will be accompanied by two different wines, and participants will be asked to vote for which wine better accompanies each course. A small prize will be awarded to the ‘chooser’ with the most votes.

As always this event will cost £40 to include all food and wine. Numbers may be restricted, so early application for places is advised. This event will start with aperitif and canapé from 6.30pm, and the meal will start at 7pm
